2020 Subrosa Malum Review

The Malum is Subrosa’s 2020 Mid-level bike. The 21″ top tube is designed for a taller rider who wants to learn and progress with bmx. A lot of the parts are strong quality that will hold up to mid level tricks like bars and 360’s. This is probably my favorite Subrosa of 2020.

The Malum is always a standout in the Subrosa lineup. Every product on this build up is an aftermarket product from Subrosa The Shadow Conspiracy and Rant all bolted to a full chromoly frame fork and bars.

Frame Geometry

A: Top Tube Length:  21″ – Learn what size is right for you here.Opens in a new tab.

This is a long toptube.

Perfect for riders that are between 5’10” to 6’2″

B: Chain Stay Length: 13.5” – Learn About Chain Stays HereOpens in a new tab.

This is a longer chain stay! This will give you more control and stability.

C: Head Tube Angle: 75° – Learn About Head Tube Angles HereOpens in a new tab.

Steep head tube angles make the bike “snappy” meaning more responsive to fast turns.

A less steep head tube gives you more control.

D: Seat Tube Angle: 71°

E: Bottom Bracket Height: 11.5″

F: Stand over height: 9″

This is a medium standover.

A tall standover gives you more stability and will make bars, and t-bogs easier.

2020 Subrosa Malum Price

For $569 the Malum is a close match to Cult’s Devotion. The price is pretty close and so is the quality. I think this is a good price, but it would be better if it was under $500.

2020 Subrosa Malum Quality

As for the quality, I really think this is a strong bike. Especially for the price. Remember that this isnt a “pro” level bike, so parts will wear out and will break. That shouldn’t scare you away though. Especially if you are only a mid level rider.

Highlights

Good quality/price ratio

As I mentioned before, the quality/price ratio is similar to Cult’s Devotion, which is one of my favorite 2020 complete bikes. Any time that a company can add higher quality to a bike for around $500 I think its a win for the person who buys it.

Lowlights

Only one TT option

Sadly, you can only get the Malum in a 21″ Top tube. This means that you can’t really get this bike and progress easily if you are a smaller rider because the tall top tube will make it hard to control.

Buy if you are learning:

  • 180
  • small 360
  • fakie tricks
  • grinds
  • barspin
  • footjam
  • Tail whips

Don’t buy if you are learning:

  • flips
  • 720
  • huge drops

2020 Subrosa Malum Conclusion

I love the 2020 Malum for a numbert of reasons. The Color options are sick, the crame is strong, the rims will hold up, and there arn’t any junky parts. The only bad news is that this bike is aimed to help taller riders with the 21″ top tube. If you are a beginner to mid-level rider
