DON’T BUY THE KINK WHIP (If You Are Small)

First, I’ve got to say that a post like this is rare. I love the Kink Whip and I recommend it pretty often on my Free BMX Bike RecommendationsOpens in a new tab.. But just because it is an incredible value, does not mean that it is right for everyone. Getting an improper-sized BMX will make your life much harder.

Who is the Kink Whip Right for?

The Kink Whip is available in a 20.5″ and a 21″ toptube size. And according to the Dougsterbob Size Guide, The 20.5″ Kink Whip is for riders between 5′ 6″ and 5′ 9″. While the 21″ Kink Whip XL option is best for riders over 6′.

This means that if you are at a different height… the whip will be tough for you to ride and maneuver.

What if I’m still growing? If you are still growing, you can grow into the Whip. Just understand that while you are growing into it, progression will be harder.

Can you ride the Kink Whip if you are 5′?

Of course, you can ride it. However, doing tricks on it and maneuvering it will be tough. You will want to wait on the Kink Whip until you have grown to be 5′ 6″ at least. Riding BMX and doing tricks on your BMX require a lot of control and riding a bike that is too big takes away your control.

Why isn’t the Kink Whip Right for Small people?

A smaller person needs to have control over the bike to progress. This is why so many people who switch from 18″ to 20″ wheel size get so frustrated. The bigger bike makes it hard to do tricks and all of a sudden, the rider feels like they suck.

Since the Kink Whip’s smallest size is 20.5″ it will not feel right for a small rider.

Other Options?

All other bikes will seem low value. Most BMX bikes that are available in a 20.00 or 20.25″ top tube will not be built from strong chromoly. But this is OK. For smaller riders who weigh under 130lbs, any quality of the bike is fine (for the most part) since you are probably new to the sport and not riding at a crazy high level. Worry more about size than quality.

Here are a few of my picks:

My parents bought me my first BMX bike in 2011 and it changed my life. This bike has taken me all over the world and introduced me to cool places and cooler people. My goal is to help get 1,000,000 people into BMX so they can experience the joy and freedom that comes from a progression based sport.
