When you shop for a BMX bike, you will see a lot of information about size and specs and that kind of thing. But no one ever talks about weight.
Not the weight of the bike…
but the weight of the rider.
The weight of a rider is one of the most often overlooked things for people getting into the sport. And since the Kink Whip is one of the most popular models, lets look at the rider weight limit.
You can ride the kink whip if you weigh 230 lbs. The core components are full chromoly and they will withstand the weight. Keep in mind that this is not a “pro-level” bike. Meaning the parts package is lower quality and stuff may bend sooner than later.
I always recommend people to get the highest quality bike that they can afford. This takes a lot of guessing out of it since you can be sure that the quality you get is the best possible.
BMX bike Weight Limit
If you weight over 170 lbs, you will want to be really considerate about the type of bike you get. I get a lot of emails from people saying “I thought this low quality bike would be fine since Im just a beginner. However I broke the sprocket and chain in the first month.”
Bike Quality Score | Bike Weight Limit | Best For |
---|---|---|
0-3 | Under 130 LBS | Small riders who are new to the sport |
3-5 | Under 160 LBS | Medum riders who are new to the sport or smaller experienced riders |
5-7 | Under 190 LBS | Large riders who are new to the sport or medium riders who are experienced |
7+ | None | Any other rider weighing under 250lbs |
9+ | None | Riders over 250 LBS or experienced riders over 200 LBS |
Little parts tend to break quickly on lower quality bmx bikes. The more that you weigh, the quicker you will stress and bend low quality parts. It’s a sad reality.
One of the coolest things I put into the Dougsterbob App is a weight limit calculator for the BMX bikes. So now all you need to do is go onto the app and check the bike you had in mind. Buying a bike that is suitable for your weight will prevent you from destroying a bike quickly and ultimately spending a ton of money on multiple bikes.
Kink Whip Quality and Weight Limit
For someone who 230 lbs you can absolutely get this bike. Just know that you are pushing it. Generally for riders over 200 lbs, I will recommend heat treated chromoly core components and a majority of after market parts in the parts package.
A heavier rider on the Kink Whip might experience:
- Bent Pedals
- Broken chain
- Bent rims
- Bent sprocket.
I don’t say this to scare you, I just identify the weak points of the bike. These parts on the whip are mose suseptable to premature damage from a heavier rider. The good news is that the parks are replaceable and not all that expensive.
If you weigh 230 lbs and get the kink whip, be prepared to make minor upgrades in the first 6 months.
