ASSEMBLING YOUR COMPLETE BMX (How Hard Is It?

After you buy a BMX bike you might begin to wonder if you have the mechanical ability to assemble the BMX bike yourself. Sure you have a few tools in the Garage… but can you really put together a whole bike?

Assembling a BMX bike from scratch is kind of tricky. But lucky for you, complete BMX bikes come shipped partially assembled.

It is not hard to assemble a complete BMX bike after ordering one. They come partially assembled and only require installing a few parts using 3 basic tools. They have made this process so easy. You do not need to take your bike to a bike shop to get it assembled.

How to Assemble a Complete BMX Bike

Let’s go through the steps you will need to complete to put together your BMX bike.

Keep in mind that most bikes come partially assembled but some may come more/less assembled. If you ever feel out of your comfort zone, take it to a bike shop for help.

Gather the Tools

To put your bike together, you will need the following tools:

  • 6mm Allen Key
  • 15mm or 17mm Socket (deep socket for male axels)
  • Ratchet for the socket
  • 6″ Extention (if the bike has pegs)
  • Tire Pump
  • 15mm Wrench

With these tools, you will be able to put together and ride your BMX bike as soon as you receive it.

Attach the Handlebars

The handlebars need to be installed with the 6mm fallen key. Remove the 4 bolts from the stem, remove the plate, set the bars in the groove, and reinstall the cap and the bolts.

Make sure the bars are centered in the groove of the stem. Also, tighten the stem bolts in a cross pattern starting with the lower left bolt, moving to the upper right, then across to the upper left, then down to the lower right. This keeps equal pressure on the bars as they are getting installed.

Put on the Seat

Slide the seat into the seat post and tighten the seat clamp. Make sure to have the seat at your desired height before you tighten the clamp.

Put on the front wheel

Slide the axle into the opening on the forks. Set the wheel all the way back into the fork legs and put the hooks in place if your front wheel has hooks. Tighten down the nuts one side at a time. Go back over them tightening them down all the way.

Install the pedals

Install the pedals into the crank arms. Remember pedals are directional. The L pedal goes to the Left crank arm and the R pedal goes to the right.

Pump up the tires

Pump your tires up to the desired PSI (do not exceed the manufacturer recommendation)

Make final adjustments

Make any last-minute changes like adjusting bar placement, brake tightness, peg placement, and chain length to name a few.

Assembling a complete BMX bike is very simple. and by following these steps, anyone can do it.

My parents bought me my first BMX bike in 2011 and it changed my life. This bike has taken me all over the world and introduced me to cool places and cooler people. My goal is to help get 1,000,000 people into BMX so they can experience the joy and freedom that comes from a progression based sport.
