First 3 Tricks to Learn on BMX (Most Important)

Getting a BMX bike is cool… but so it doing tricks on them. Learning tricks is probably the main reason that you got your bike. But how do you choose what to work on? You have literally hundreds of tricks and combinations. It’s confusing to know where to start.

The first 3 BMX tricks you need to learn are 1. Bunnyhop, 2. Manual, and 3. Fakie. These 3 tricks give you a strong foundation for progressing as a BMX riders since each of them add to your bike control, bike awareness, and bike strength. Start with these 3 to become better.

Bunnyhop

The Bunnyhop is a really easy beginner trick. Most people learn this trick quickly but they learn it with improper form. Learning how to bunnyhop with bad form is a big cause of failure.

When you start to learn bunnyhops always ensure that you are doing it with the right form. This is a trick that you never stop working n. Higher bunnyhops = more control. The bunnyhop links to almost any BMX trick.

Fakie

The fakie is when you roll backwards on your BMX bike. As you become more experienced, you will do fakies out of 180’s or 540’s. To add more complex combinations to your riding you will need to know how to fakie.

This is a fairly easy trick and most people can get it down in a few weeks. The way to fakie depends on whether or not you are riding a freecoaster. On a cassette, you need to pedal backward while fakieing and pedal forward to get pedal pressure and pivot out.

Manual

Hands down, this is my favorite trick. I like that you can use a manual to link different tricks together and add complexity to a line. A manual teaches you weight awareness and bike control. You will see how a slight shift in weight has a drastic effect on the movement of the bike.

This trick takes a while for a lot of people to learn, but it’s a low-risk trick that beginners can learn right away.

This is the manual lesson in Bike School.

What’s Next?

After you get a basic understanding of these 3 tricks, you will move on to more complex tricks in the area of riding that you want to do. There are street-specific tricks, park tricks, dirt tricks, and even flatland tricks. however, without these first 3, the rest will be almost impossible.

Douglas Laird

My parents bought me my first BMX bike in 2011 and it changed my life. This bike has taken me all over the world and introduced me to cool places and cooler people. My goal is to help get 1,000,000 people into BMX so they can experience the joy and freedom that comes from a progression based sport.
