I’ve been riding the BSD Revolution Planetary hub for a while now, and I’ve had some time to gather my thoughts. this hub has many pros and a few cons. This is a must for someone like me who HATES the slack that comes with a freetoaster but loves not having to pedal backwards. Let’s talk about the BSD revolution and what I like/hate about it.
The BSD revolution is a great hub that mixes freecoaster riding with cassette riding. In my experience it is reliable and great for riding backward without pedaling. However, it may occasionally engage and it’s very expensive for a hub.
BSD Revolution Pros
After riding it for multiple months, I quickly fell in love with this hub. For my style, it was exactly what I needed.
- Ride backward without pedaling
- Sturdy construction
- No slack when pedaling forward
- Comes with pro hub guards
My favorite thing about the Revolution is how I can 180 and roll backward without needing to pedal. It acts just like a freetoaster when you want it to. When I pedal forward, it engages right away. You will not be able to do tire taps with this hub but you get many more benefits.
BSD Revolution Cons
Along with the cool pros of the revolution, I did run into some cons…
- Random Engagement
- Expensive
- Issue with slipping early on
The first thing I noticed is how it will engage on random things. For example it I roll up a bank and fakie out, it will engage sometimes. This can be frustrating. Within the first few weeks this hub was slipping while I was pedaling and this was also super frustrating since it’s such an expensive hub. I found a simple fix for it and showed it in this video.
Other than those things, I love it. But with the random engagement, I wouldn’t trust big 180’s.
