2023 Kink Gap Review

The 2023 Kink Gap BMX bike is a mid-level bmx bike that has a small amount of chromoly added into the weak hi-tensile steel bike. It costs $449, and weighs just under 27lbs. I do not recommend the Kink Gap at full MSRP. It is overpriced and you can spend a little bit more money and get a much better bike if you opt for something like the cult control, kink whip, or Fly Proton.

It’s important to note that this bike may not be the perfect fit for you. If you’re unsure of which bike is right for you, feel free to reach out to me and request a free bike recommendation.

Overview of the Kink Gap:

The 2023 Kink Gap BMX bike is a mid-range option that is designed for riders looking for a solid foundation for their BMX adventures. It has a trimoly frame, which is a combination of chromoly steel and high-tensile steel, and single wall rims, which add to the bike’s overall strength and simplicity. In terms of components, the Kink Gap contains some chromoly steel, which adds to its durability.

One important aspect to note about the Kink Gap is that it is fully customizable and upgradable. This means that you can add your own personal touch and any aftermarket parts you desire. However, it is worth mentioning that the Kink Gap does not come with pegs or hub guards, so these will need to be purchased separately if you want them. The Kink Gap is also equipped with standard Mission u-brakes, which provide reliable stopping power.

Sizing & Geometry:

GeometryMeasurement
Head tube angle75 degrees
Standover height9 inches
Chainstay length13.25 inches
Bottom bracket height11.6 inches
Fork offset32 millimeters
Handlebar height9 inches
Stem rise32 millimeters
Reach50 millimeters

The sizing and geometry of a BMX bike are crucial factors to consider when purchasing a new ride. The Kink Gap has a top tube length of 20.5 inches, which is suitable for riders between 5’6″ and 5’9″ in height. If you are outside of this height range, the Kink Gap XL model may be a better fit for you.

In addition to the top tube length, there are several other key geometry measurements to consider when evaluating the Kink Gap. The head tube angle is 75 degrees, the standover height is 9 inches, the chainstay length is 13.25 inches, and the bottom bracket height is 11.6 inches. These measurements determine how the bike will handle and feel when you ride it. For example, a bike with a steeper head tube angle (such as 76 degrees or higher) will generally feel more responsive and agile, while a bike with a shallower head tube angle (such as 74 degrees or lower) will feel more stable and smooth.

The Kink Gap also has a fork offset of 32 millimeters, which affects the steering response of the bike. The handlebars of the Kink Gap are 9 inches tall and are likely around 30 inches wide, although this is not specified. It is worth noting that the Kink Gap XL model has handlebars that are 0.25 inches taller than the standard Kink Gap.

The stem of the Kink Gap is a top load stem with 32 millimeters of rise, and the reach is 50 millimeters. These measurements, along with the fork offset and handlebar height, will affect the overall feel and handling of the bike.

Quality:

One of the key factors to consider when purchasing a BMX bike is the quality of its components. The Kink Gap features a trimoly frame, which is a combination of chromoly steel and high-tensile steel. While high-tensile steel is a cheaper alternative to chromoly steel, it is not as strong and reliable, and is more prone to fatigue and breaking. Chromoly steel, on the other hand, is known for its strength and durability, making it a popular choice for BMX frames.

The fork of the Kink Gap is made of high-tensile steel, which is a cheaper alternative to chromoly steel. While it may be sufficient for some riders, it is not as strong and reliable as chromoly steel. The handlebars of the Kink Gap are also made of high-tensile steel, which adds to their durability. However, as with the fork, high-tensile steel is not as strong as chromoly steel and may not hold up as well under heavy use. The rims of the Kink Gap are single wall rims, which are known for their simplicity they will bend if the rider is over 170 lbs.

In summary, the Kink Gap features a durable trimoly frame and components that are made of both high-tensile steel and chromoly steel. While the use of high-tensile steel in certain parts of the bike may be sufficient for some riders, it is not as strong and reliable as chromoly steel. This may be something to consider if you plan on using your Kink Gap for heavy use or in more challenging riding conditions.

Final Thoughts:

Overall, the 2023 Kink Gap BMX bike is a mid-range option that offers a balance of affordability and performance. With a price point of $499 and a weight of 27.7 pounds, the Kink Gap is a cost-effective choice for riders looking to get into BMX. Its trimoly frame and single wall rims add to its strength and simplicity, and the bike is fully customizable and upgradable.

However, after reviewing the Kink Gap, I do not recommend it as a top choice for riders. While it may be sufficient for some, I believe that the Kink Whip is a better option for those willing to spend a little extra money. The Kink Whip offers a higher-quality frame and components, and is more suitable for heavy use and challenging riding conditions.

One potential downside of the Kink Gap is that it does not come with pegs or hub guards, so these will need to be purchased separately if you want them. Additionally, the use of high-tensile steel in certain components, such as the fork and handlebars, may not be as strong and reliable as chromoly steel. This may be something to consider if you plan on using your Kink Gap for heavy use or in more challenging riding conditions.

If you’re unsure of which BMX bike is right for you, don’t hesitate to reach out and request a free bike recommendation. I’m here to help you find the perfect ride for your needs and budget. In summary, while the Kink Gap is a mid-range BMX bike, I recommend spending a little extra money and opting for the Kink Whip instead. It offers a higher-quality frame and components, and is more suitable for heavy use and challenging riding conditions.
