Adding Front Brakes to your BMX Bike (How to Add Them)

A lot of you remember that BMX bikes used to come with front brakes. Not anymore. Whether you are getting back into BMX for flatland or for technical park riding, you might want some front brakes. Here’s what you need to slap some front brakes on the bike.

To put front brakes on a modern BMX bike, you will need to buy the brakes, new forks, the cable, and the lever. Once you have all of these things, putting on the front brakes is very easy. Plan to spend a little over $100 to get this done.

1. Buy the new forks

Modern forks do not come with 990 brackets. So the first thing you need to do is order new forks that have 990 brackets. The button below will show you 5 good forks with the 990 brackets. This will allow your forks to hold the brakes that you will buy next.

2. Buy the Brakes

As long as the brakes mount up with 990 you will be fine. So the actual brake doesn’t matter. I recommend these, but it’s totally up to you. If you run bigger tires, make sure you get breaks that are designed to fit them.

Also double-check your rim to ensure that it is brake compatible. Rims that are compatible will have squared sides that have a nice spot for the brakes to rub. Some companies use rounded front rims and brakes will not work on these.

3. Buy the Cable

You can choose a colorful cable or a plain cable and for the most part, these are all very similar. Click this link and buy a cable that you likOpens in a new tab.e. This cable will not need to be very long since the distance to the lever will not be far.

4. Buy the Lever

Lastly, you need to choose a lever that you like. Think about where this lever will go before you buy. If you already have one on the right side for your rear brake, you need a left-sided lever. Some are designed to be longer and some are shorter. It’s a preference thing.

After you have all of those parts you are ready to assemble your front brakes. The process is pretty self-explanatory, but if you have any issues reach out to me, and ill be happy to help.

Enjoy your front brakes and keep shredding!!
