Best BMX Tricks to Learn (After the Basics)

BMX is hard. Very hard. And knowing the right tricks to learn can take a lot of research. During this live stream, I was asked what tricks to work on after you learn the basics… Here they are.

First, I need to mention what I consider the basics to be. I always tell our Bike School Members that the 3 most important basics are Bunnyhop, manual, and fakie. Without these 3 tricks, you will struggle a lot in BMX. Once you get pretty good at those 3, you’re ready to move on.

If you are a street rider

You will want to start working into beginner street tricks. Most of the street tricks require you to use pegs and link lines together. Pick a few of these that sound fun and get to work trying them.

  • 180 to fakie
  • half cab
  • feeble grind
  • smith grind
  • manual to feeble
  • manual to 180

All of these tricks are relatively simple once you understand the main basics. But what if you like to ride skateparks?

If you are a skatepark rider?

I recommend people learn basic lip tricks and small air tricks first. The lip tricks add control and balance to your trick portfolio while giving you a low risk way to ride park.

  • Disaster
  • Rock and roll to fakie
  • Tire tap
  • Double peg stall
  • Air
  • Footjam

Once you get more comfortable riding the skatepark, it will be easy to add even more to these tricks. But for now, this is a good starting point.

If you ride Dirt Jumps

You will need to get comfortable airing there jumps. You need to be able to float across the jumps with enough time to throw tricks. A lot of these tricks are easy but you still need the air time to execute them.

  • Tire grab
  • One footed can
  • no-hander
  • no-footer
  • x-up
  • t-bog
  • table

After a little bit of practice, all of these tricks will start to fall into place and you will be amazed at how easy they are.

My parents bought me my first BMX bike in 2011 and it changed my life. This bike has taken me all over the world and introduced me to cool places and cooler people. My goal is to help get 1,000,000 people into BMX so they can experience the joy and freedom that comes from a progression based sport.
